Company History

Mr. George Harcourt founded our company in Toronto in 1842. Harcourts is the oldest robemaker in North America. Harcourts has maintained a tradition of the highest quality workmanship and tailoring for over 168 years. To this day, our garments are individually tailored and sewn by skilled craftspeople in the Heart of Toronto, Canada. The Harcourt family operated the business as a family concern until 1965 and created a wonderful legacy consisting of a clientele of the leading figures in Canada and all over the world.

The business has been owned by the Cooper family since 1973.

In the course of our history, we have prepared garments for nearly every member of the Royal family including Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the political elite in Canada and the United States. We produce the highest quality Made in Canada legal fashions, academic regalia, as well as choir robes and vestments for the clergy.

Harcourts is proud of the loyalty that its employees and customers have shown to the company. Our customers understand how we conduct business and in many cases are familiar with our craftspeople. We produce most of our products from our plant adjacent to our showroom in Downtown Toronto. We believe that this set up allows us complete control over quality and delivery.

Harcourts has historically been the primary supplier to the legal profession. We continue to maintain that position through our network of dealers across Canada. We supply Judicial and Barrister attire to the Canadian Federal government, the Provinces and Territories of Canada, as well as the Caribbean courts and the British Commonwealth.

Harcourts robes are the highest quality available. The materials that we use have been time tested and in some cases are made exclusively for Harcourts. Our workmanship combines the best of Traditional methods and Modern technology. Most of our workmanship is done by hand by our skilled craftspeople. Our garments are cut individually and by hand to ensure detail and custom fit. We use machine stitching for a strong long lasting garment, though we continue to use hand stitching for the finer details of our products. Our gowns are hand shirred, which is the only way to produce the fullness and elegance of traditional styling.

Individual attention and the highest quality materials characterize Harcourts excellence.

Production Manager - E-mail

At DSR Harcourts, I have two primary responsibilities. The first is to ensure that your order is completed to your satisfaction. DSR Harcourts production staff and myself oversee all the details of your order, from cutting to shipping. Secondly, quality control is an important aspect of my duties; in keeping with our mandate to provide the finest quality goods and craftsmanship possible, while assuring your orders are shipped to you in a timely manner.

Central Order Desk - E-mail

I am happy to help you with placing your Harcourts order. I can assist you with information about traditional legal attire and Academic regalia from all over the world. I can also make style and fabric recommendations for your custom garments, including your new choir gowns or clerical attire.

Shipping and Rental Department - E-mail

I have been operating the shipping and rental department at Harcourts for over a decade. Harcourts rents academic gowns, hoods and caps for your graduation ceremony. We also offer first communion and confirmation rental packages. Please contact me at least a month prior to your ceremony date to ensure that we have the appropriate gowns set aside for you.

Another important aspect of my position is quality control. I package each garment personally, and I take pride in my work.

Reception - E-mail

Customer service is my forte. I enjoy meeting our customers in our showroom at 19 Duncan Street, and speaking with them personally on the telephone. Whether you are looking for the status of your order, or an expected ship date of your regalia I am happy to assist you.

Contact me if you have any questions–it is nice to hear from you!
