Academic Robes & Regalia

Based upon the level of education obtained, there are essentially three types of Academic regalia:
- Ph.D:
The American Doctoral gown (or Ph.D gown, as it is sometimes called)
has a full bell sleeve with velvet front facings and sleeve chevrons.
Under the American Intercollegiate Code, the velvet is black or may
be the colour indicating the department of the degree achieved. The
Doctoral hood has velvet trimming indicating the department of the degree
achieved and coloured linings representing the specific institution.
A traditional black mortarboard cap is generally worn. Canadian Universities
generally follow the usage inherited from institutions of higher learning
in the United Kingdom. Each University specifies its own patterns and
colours for both the gown and hood. Additionally, a beefeater cap or
a soft tam are often specified.
- Masters:
The Master's gown has pleated front panels. It has closed sleeves with
squared ends which fall below the knees and have slits at the arm near
the elbows. The squared sleeve ends have a semi-circle cut-out near
the bottom. The Master's hood has velvet trimming indicating the degree
and coloured linings representing the specific institution. A traditional
black mortarboard cap is generally worn. Canadian Universities generally
follow the usage inherited from institutions of higher learning in the
United Kingdom. Each University specifies its own patterns and colours
for the hood.
- Bachelors:
The Bachelor's gown has pleated front panels and long pointed sleeves.
The Bachelor's hood has velvet trimming indicating the degree and coloured
linings representing the specific institution. A traditional black mortarboard
cap is generally worn. Canadian Universities generally follow the usage
inherited from institutions of higher learning in the United Kingdom.
Each University specifies its own patterns and colours for the hood.
